A notable trending topic emerged on Douyin and in the “society” category on Weibo over the weekend, regarding a Chinese woman who took a tourist photo in a rather inappropriate setting.
The incident happened in Wuxi, Jiangxi Province, where a Chinese domestic tourist allegedly fell into a ditch after slipping while recording a Douyin (TikTok) video during her visit to the scenic water area at Xihui Park.
After her fall, the woman was lying motionless in the ditch, face down.
While it was uncertain to bystanders whether the woman was alive or deceased, one elderly woman saw fit to take advantage of the situation and snapped a selfie at the scene, deliberately positioning herself with the body in the background. She posed with a smile, carefully aligning herself in the “right” spot within the frame to include the body in the background.
Another netizen recorded a video of this unusual occurrence, which then circulated on social media via other accounts (including @1024专员)
The woman who can be seen smiling in this video, taking a selfie together with an injured victim who fell into a ditch, is being condemned on Tiktok and Weibo this weekend. The video also shows a rescue team arriving at the scene. They placed the unconscious woman on a stretcher and transported her to the hospital, where she is receiving medical care.
“I hope that if you ever find yourself in such a situation, the people around you, especially those familiar to you, will treat you in the same manner,” one top comment said on Douyin, where the smiling woman was also referred to as the “cold-blooded woman” (冷血女人) or a “bewitched” (魔怔) individual.
“What is wrong with her, how could she treat this as a tourist attraction?”
A similar incident also went trending on Chinese social media a few years ago when a Chinese reporter took a smiling selfie at the scene of a tragic traffic accident in which 18 people were killed.
Despite the reporter’s apology for her inappropriate behavior, she was swiftly terminated from her job.
Since the smiling woman in Jiangsu is all over the internet now, some netizens are guessing that she probably won’t be showing her face in public any time soon.
