The South Korean television drama ‘Misty’ (미스티/迷雾) has been a huge success in China ever since it started airing earlier this year.
The 16-episode TV series is a romance and mystery drama revolving around successful anchorwoman Go Hye-Ran (Kim Nam-Joo), who becomes the suspect in a murder case. Her estranged husband is the public defender Kang Tae-Wook (Ji Jin-Hee), who now faces the task of defending his own wife.
The TV drama has been a hot topic of discussion on Sina Weibo for weeks. One of the series’ hashtags (#迷雾韩剧#) received nearly 17 million views at time of writing.
Many people particularly like the strong role of the protagonist by Kim Nam-joo, who plays an intelligent and ambitious middle-aged career woman – a quite unusual leading character, especially for South Korean TV dramas that are often hold a ‘young Cinderella-meets-Prince’ kind of storyline.

The strong leading character is one of the reasons ‘Misty’ is so popular.
Kim Nam-Joo (1971) has been a popular TV star since her twenties. She later made her comeback with the romantic comedies Queen of Housewives and Queen of Reversals, and My Husband Got a Family.
Besides Kim Nam-Joo’s strong role in this television series, the drama also incorporates the suspense of solving a murder case, and it touches upon the South Korean legal system and its media circles – all contributing to its success.
On March 25, the final episode of the series caused some controversy online, as many people did not agree with some of the choices made by the scriptwriter (no spoilers here!). Some people were straight out angry over the unexpected ending, while others said they actually appreciated the final episode.
China is the biggest consumer of Korean entertainment products, including music and TV dramas. So-called ‘K-Dramas’ are now seeing a rise in popularity again after South Korean shows were temporarily pulled offline as relations between China and South Korea soured over the deployment of the THAAD system in 2016 and 2017.
