Video footage of the moment a handyman gets electrocuted in a Shenzhen restaurant is making its rounds on Sina Weibo. Not just the incident itself is distressing; many netizens are also outraged by the happy music Sina News has put under its video publication of the fatal incident.

Security camera footage from a Shenzhen restaurant that is currently making its rounds on Chinese social media shows a very distressing and even fatal scene when a handyman gets electrocuted in the middle of a busy restaurant kitchen.

The incident happened on the evening of June 16, when a handyman named Li was fixing the power outlet above the refrigerator by standing in the open door of the fridge.

Security camera footage shows how minutes after working on the power outlet, the man gets an electrical shock from the power source or wiring system on the top of the fridge. Instead of falling to the ground, he falls against the air-conditioning behind him and remains mid-air.

Three male staff members are busy working in the kitchen when the handyman gets electrocuted. Although it seems as if one of the men notices something is wrong with Li, he does not check to see if Li is alright and continues with his work.

Although it appears that the staff member (right) notices something is wrong after the handyman falls back on the air-conditioning after suffering a shock, he doesn’t check if he is alright.

For over half a minute, Li’s body remains mid-air between the fridge and air-conditioning, as restaurant staff go about their job. When Li’s body falls to the ground after half a minute, the restaurant cook calls for help.

Unfortunately, help comes too late for Li; Chinese media report that Li has not survived the incident.

“As someone from the same line of profession, it really pains me to see this tragedy,” one person on Weibo comments: “But it is never allowed to fix [electricity issues] this way. This could have been prevented.”

“If he would have been resuscitated in time, he would not have died,” many others say.

“The person who chose this music is brain-dead.”

Although the scene itself already is distressing, many netizens are outraged by the fact that the video of it, spread online by Sina News, is accompanied by upbeat electronic dance music.

Sina News spreads a video of the fatal moment accompanied by electronic dance music (warning: viewer discretion is advised):

“A person has died, yet you play this kind of outrageous background music,” one angry commenter replies.

“The person who chose this music is brain-dead,” another commenter writes.

“I heard the music and assumed he hadn’t died. Then I read the subtext. Outrageous.”

“This is like inviting a DJ to a funeral to play some happy beats,” another person writes.

Footage of the incident was also shared by other Chinese media, such as Pear Video, which used different and more appropriate background music.
