How much have you changed since you were young? – it was this question by Chengdu Business Newspaper that made ‘childhood comparison pics’ a trending topic on Sina Weibo on Children’s Day on 1st June.
The most popular pictures are those selected by Tencent News, as they launched an initiative on May 13th that invited readers to recreate the picture scenes from their childhood. The following pictures are some of the ones selected by Tencent and shared on Weibo.
This contribution by netizen Zhou Fanglin was taken near the train station in his hometown, one in March 1999, and one in March 2016. Although the station has changed a lot, it is mostly himself who has changed, he tells Tencent, as he is now 18 years old and is studying far away from home.
Liang Jin tells Tencent that this picture was taken in a photo studio in Shenyang in 1960, and that he is now 58 years old and retired. “Time goes by so fast,” he says.
Wang Zhenjun posed for this photo on Children’s Day in 1986, when he was ten years old. His dad used their home compact camera to shoot this in a park in Hebei, where Wang wore his plastic sandals for the occasion – which were all the rage at the time.
There are also many other netizens posting and sharing their pictures on social media. Although many just have a picture of their childhood next to a present-day one, there are also some who have put in more effort to recreate the scenes of their childhood.
While many Weibo netizens appreciate these photos, there are also some who wish they could recreate their own: “I want to recreate my childhood pictures,” one netizen says: “But I only have nude pics from when I was little.”
